3 Things To Consider When Putting In A New Roof

When you put in a new roof, there are a few different things that you need to consider. First, you need to decide if you want a tear off or an overlay. Second, you need to decide if you want all the pipes and vents to be resealed. Third, you need to decide if you are going to replace your gutters at the same time as you put on a new roof.

#1 Tear-Off or Overlay

When it comes to putting a new roof on your home, you need to determine if you want a tear-off or an overlay.

With a tear-off, all of the old shingles and insulation is removed from your roof. The decking, which is made up of the wood under your roof, is examined and removed if the decking is damaged or compromised at all. An entirely new roof is built from the ground-up for your home.

With an overlay, only a new layer of shingles is added to your new. New overlay material and insulation are not added to your roof. This is done when the shingles are getting old, but you have never had any leaks, and the construction of your roof is solid.

It is usually only recommendable to have two layers of shingles on your roof. After that, another layer may be too thick for your roof.

#2 Pipes and Vents

Next, you need to look at the pipes and vents on your roof. Do you want to keep all the existing pipes and vents there? Now is the time to make a change. If your attic is not ventilating properly, this is the time to add new vents or change out your old ones.

You are going to want to make sure that any pipes or vents that you have are well-sealed and functional. Get rid of pipes and vents that are not functional from your roof.

#3 Gutters & Downspouts

Finally, you need to decide if you want to have new gutters and downspouts installed on your roof. Generally, if you know you want to put on new gutters soon, it is a good idea to have new gutters and downspouts installed at the same time as your roof. You may also want to reevaluate your plan for water drainage and make sure that your downspouts are pointed in the right direction and providing proper drainage to your home.

When you replace your roof, you need to decide if you want to do a tear-off or an overlay. You need to get rid of any pipes or vents that you don't need and install any necessary new ventilation. Finally, you need to decide if you want to replace and upgrade your gutters and downspouts and make sure that your water management plan is working correctly.
