3 Tips For Metal Roof Care

Have you recently purchased a home that has a metal roof? You may not be aware of what maintenance is necessary, especially if all you know about is asphalt roofing. While ignoring a metal roof could lead to problems down the road, the maintenance that is required is relatively easy. Here are 3 things you should be doing to care for a metal roof:

Monitor Vents and Chimneys

One part of a metal roof that is likely to be damaged is anywhere that a vent comes out of the roof, such as gas vents and chimneys. Chemicals and soot can exit the home and leave a substance on your roof. It could end up causing the metal roofing material to become discolored, and in some situations, develop corrosion on the metal material.

It is important to visually inspect the roof annually to see what kind of damage has been caused. If you do see any damage, contact a roofing contractor in your area, like Drey Roofing, to do a formal inspection and repair the roof. This preventative step can help keep repair costs low and your roof in good shape.

Clean Debris After Each Fall

When the fall weather is over it will leave debris all over your yard. While fallen leaves will mostly make their way to your grass, garden beds, and gutters, some of it can become trapped on your roof. The problem with debris on a metal roof is that moisture can collect under the debris. The debris also acts as an insulator to keep snow on a roof instead of allowing it to melt.

The solution is as simple as clearing off trapped debris with a powered leaf blower. You can most likely do this by not even stepping onto your roof, but if you need help, you can hire a professional to clean your roof for you.

Keep Paint Away

Do you plan on painting the exterior of your home a new color? If so, you'll need to take steps to keep paint away from the metal material. Paint sprayers can have overspray that create quite a mess due to the wind. Paint that gets onto a metal roof will leave the surface discolored. You need to cover the roof so that no overspray gets on the material itself, or stick to brushes to paint your home when you get near the metal roof. It makes the painting process more work, but it is the only way to protect your home.
