Wonder If Your Roof Is the Source of High Heating Bills? Have It Inspected for These Common Problems

If the heating bills in your house are always high, but you have newer windows and doors, the problem could be your roof. If you haven't had your roof inspected in a while and you aren't sure what condition the roof is in, you'll want to have an inspection done with a professional roofing contractor. There are a lot of things that can be problematic in the roof, that cause problems beyond high heating bills. Talk with the roofing professional about the following things.

New Under Floor Insulation

Have new insulation put below the floor that you walk on in the attic to stop air from rising into the attic and then getting trapped. When this happens it can cause condensation, and you are losing your heat from the house. The new insulation will keep the air down in the living space, and is an affordable way to help lower some of your heating and cooling expenses throughout the season changes.

Leaks and Holes

Small leaks and holes around the roof can be letting a lot of the air out of the roof. This means that it causes the base of the roof to be cold while you are trying to heat your house in the winter because the cold air is filling the attic. Ask to have all of the damaged roofing shingles repaired. Added layers over holes will also stop water from getting into the roof.

Water and Mold Damages

If you have had a problem with condensation or water getting inside the roof, it's likely that there could be water and mold damage. If this is a problem, talk with the roofing expert about the following:

  • Sealing off the moldy areas
  • Replacing rotted wood and damaged shingles
  • Checking around gutters for damage to the roof
  • Adding an attic fan to keep the area dry

These are just some of the things that you want to do to keep the roof dry and free of any mold or pests. Pests that are attracted to moisture and rotted wood may be attracted to your damaged roof.

If you are noticing that it is difficult to heat your house and you haven't had a roofing inspection since you became the owner of the home, you don't want to go any longer without having it done. Call a couple of companies and get quotes and estimates for the work that you need to have done.
